Supercomm Panel - 10/40/100G Migration challenges |
Thursday, 15 October 2009 |
mdi will join three industry leaders on the only Supercomm panel to address the challenges of migrating carrier networks to 10G, 40G and 100G. The first 10G network transmissions exhibited previously unkown problems and signal impairments, such as dual pulses associated with PMD, and infrastructure managers and developers had to learn how to deal with them. The panel will show how to tame the uncertainty of migrating to mesh networks and 40/100Gbps transmission speeds, and will blend past lessons learned and innovative diagnostic solutions (ie, finding in-situ optical impairments in real-time). Panelists will also discuss the emerging challenges of predicting the lifetime of an existing network, by posing and answering the question: are we building future networks on a house of cards", based on fiber that is aging out? The panel comprises: * Glenn Wellbrock, Dir Backbone Network Design, Verizon. * Kaveh Hushyar, Telecommunications entrepreneur and advisor, former officer and VP Network Planning and Engineering, AT&T. * Jim Benson, Head of DWDM Sales, N.America, Nokia Systems Networks. * David Wright, President and CEO, mdi. The panel session will be held on Friday 23 October from 12.20pm - 1.05 pm in room W183c We look foward to seeing you at the panel session. Read the Supercomm 2009 press release

Optus selects mdi's eyeD 360 monitor for new service roll-out |
Monday, 21 September 2009 |
mdi announced at the European Conference on Communications (ECOC 2009) in Vienna, Austria that it has received orders for commercial deployment of its groundbreaking eyeD 360 network monitor from Optus, the division of SingTel in Australia.
As part of the qualification process, mdi is now an approved supplier to SingTel, receiving accelerated acceptance due to the system’s uniqueness in the industry. “The mdi tool was the only device to easily and accurately measure in-band OSNR. It also provided unprecedented visibility into our network by monitoring fiber characteristics in-service.” explained Scott Robertson, technical specialist for data services engineering at Optus, who led the evaluation of mdi’s eyeD 360.
mdi has also jointly published a case study on the carrier’s evaluation experience which highlights the challenges that Optus faced with their network which led to them engaging mdi's eyeD expert team to investigate the specific long haul routes, carry out test and measurement activities, without taking down the live link and provide the resultant recommendations to take corrective action. mdi launches new eyeD 360 T&M version |
Monday, 21 September 2009 |
During the European Conference on Communications (ECOC 2009) in Vienna, Austria, mdi launched a single-port version of its four-in-one imparment monitor to meet the demand in the Test & Measurement market for multi-purpose platforms The single-port eyeD 360 offers four times the functionality, at one quarter the price of traditional dedicated systems. It measures power level, OSNR (optical signal-to-noise ratio), CD (chromatic dispersion) and PMD (polarization mode dispersion). Prospects include carrier and OEM labs, Government installations and Research & Education networks. “This one-port device is also going to help engineers in laboratories and in the field to study complex effects, such as PMD, which could not be done before on live traffic,” stated Olivier Jerphagnon, mdi VP of Marketing and Business Development. mdi has recently recruited Kaveh Hushyar, former Senior Vice President, Network Planning & Engineering for AT&T, to its Advisory Board. Under his leadership, AT&T established a blueprint for the transformation of its global network to a Concept-Of-One IP/MPLS network. Mr. Hushyar was also responsible for planning the migration of SONET architectures to WDM-based facilities. “mdi can fulfill a tremendous market need with this new service capability,” noted Hushyar. “I am very bullish about the company’s overall opportunity, but the ‘eyeD Expert’ offering also brings a critical infusion of know-how to help carriers migrate from their well-known SONET diagnostics to the brave new world of IP over WDM fiber characterization.
